About the Work: Figure Series

Having lived in 4 countries my practice explores the unique perspective as both insider and outsider of American culture.  I examine the complex relationship between people and the objects we integrate into every moment of our lives. Including our impulses to accumulate, how objects absorb meaning and when our identity becomes blurred between self and item. I hand-sculpt in clay, building forms and figures that hover between realism and abstraction. The human figure is layered with slip dipped fabric and mixed media which then becomes a site where material culture and human identity not only intersect but become enmeshed. The work asks us to consider the things we surround ourselves with, who we are when defined by what we own and playing with the threshold of being the consumer and being consumed.

About the Work: Tile Series

The images on the tiles are from my own drawings and silkscreens. I use the silkscreen to print the images directly onto the clay which I then submerge into an atmospheric firing.  Having tile as a canvas allows the image to be explored as references to the larger figurative sculptures.
